Project WAM: Web, Adaptation and Multimedia
Support
On line ( 15/06/2004)
Abstract
WAM is a research project of INRIA Rhône-Alpes created in January 2003 as a follow-up of project Opera. Project WAM addresses some issues raised by the latest developments of the Web. It focuses on document transformations considered as a paradigm for processing Web documents. Particular attention is paid to multimedia documents, i.e. documents that tightly integrate static media (text, images, equations) and dynamic media (video, audio, animations). The main results of this work are applied to the adaptation of multimedia documents and to device independence on the Web.

Abstract
Multimedia documents are collections of media objects, synchronized by means of sets of temporal and spatial constraints. Any multimedia document definition is valid as long as the referred media objects are available and the constraints are satisfiable. Document validity depends on the context in which the document has to be presented. In this paper, we introduce a framework to characterize context adaptation, in the presence of both physical and user oriented context requirements. We define semantically equivalent presentation fragments as alternative to undeliverable ones. In the absence of equivalence, undeliverable media are replaced with candidates that minimize the loss of information/quality in the presentation.

Abstract
While multimedia documents are sequentially presented to users, an information filtering (IF) system is useful to achieve a good retrieval performance in terms of both quality and efficiency. Conventional approaches for designing an IF system are based on the user's evaluation on information relevance degree (IRD), but ignore other attributes in system design such as relative importance of the data in a collection of multimedia documents. In this paper, we aim at developing a framework of designing structure-based multimedia IF systems, which incorporates the characteristics of the importance and relevance of multimedia documents. A method of calculating the values of relative importance degree of multimedia documents is proposed. Furthermore, these values are combined into the IRD of multimedia documents to improve the representation of user profiles. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the proposed techniques.
